Michael van Gerwen defends ‘fantastic’ Luke Humphries after ‘aura’ comments

Michael van Gerwen is looking to stop his Premier League losing streak when he clashes against Luke Humphries in Berlin.

The seven-time Premier League champion has lost his previous four matches in the competition and was only awarded two points last week after Gian van Veen pulled out of the action with kidney stones.

Van Gerwen made a brilliant start to the tournament with victory in Newcastle on night one, before reaching the final in Antwerp on night two.

But the Green Machine has since been outclassed in the quarter-final stage, and he must find a way to win soon or risk missing out on the top four.

Michael van Gerwen has his work cut out against Luke Humphries

Last week’s action in Dublin saw Van Gerwen narrowly lose 6-5 against Luke Littler in the semi-final after going one leg away from securing victory.

The Dutchman produced a stunning 170 finish to go 5-3 up before the Nuke responded with a big fish of his own to tie the game at 5-5 and then pinned double 11 to win 6-5.

Including a 98.9 average and 5/10 (50%) on the doubles, Van Gerwen will have been pleased with his performance on night seven, but he will need to find an extra gear against Humphries.

The 36-year-old was thrashed 7-2 by Cool Hand in the Belgian Darts Open semi-final on Sunday, as Humphries went on to clinch his ninth European Trophy with victory over Jonny Clayton in the final.

Against an in-form Humphries, Van Gerwen has his work cut out, and he is predicted to suffer his fifth Premier League defeat in a row.

Van Gerwen defends Humphries ‘aura’

Following his success in the Belgian Darts Open, Humphries aimed some pointed words at darts influencer Charlie Murphy, who claimed the former world champion was lacking in confidence and ‘aura’.

“It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster of a weekend for one reason or another, but I got the job done, and it’s a real boost for my season (and aura),” Humphries jokingly wrote on social media in response to those comments, accompanied by a winky and laughing face.

Van Gerwen has since defended the world No. 2 over those ‘aura’ comments, admitting he’s a ‘fantastic’ player.

“Luke [Humphries] is an absolutely fantastic dart player,” the Green Machine said via Sky Sports.

“If someone loses his aura or anything, that’s not up to me to judge about that. I know Luke is a fantastic guy and an even better dart player. I have to battle against him.”

Van Gerwen beat Humphries 6-2 on night one of Premier League darts, and a similar scoreline would be the Dutchman’s dream scenario tonight.
