Michael van Gerwen remains in contention

Michael van Gerwen remains in contention for the inaugural Slovak Darts Open title in Bratislava, where the winner is set to collect £35,000 from a £230,000 prize fund.

The European Tour event reaches its Slovak Darts Open final day on Sunday, June 21, with round-three matches followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final at Incheba Expo. Van Gerwen survived a deciding-leg test against Krzysztof Ratajski on Saturday, winning 6-5 to keep alive his push for another European Tour title.

Van Gerwen has prize and ranking pressure in play

The prize-money picture adds another layer to Sunday’s schedule. According to SunSport’s Slovak Darts Open prize-money guide, the champion will earn £35,000, with £15,000 for the runner-up, £10,000 for beaten semi-finalists and £8,000 for quarter-finalists.

That makes Van Gerwen’s afternoon meeting with Andrew Gilding more than a simple last-16 assignment. The Dutchman is chasing the first title on Slovak soil, while also trying to strengthen his wider European Tour position during a weekend that has already removed major names including Gerwyn Price and Gian van Veen. The short-format European Tour schedule also leaves little recovery time once the evening session begins.

What the money means on Sunday

For players still standing in Bratislava, each round carries a clear jump in reward. Reaching the quarter-finals is worth £8,000, but one more win raises that return to £10,000. The beaten finalist collects £15,000, while the champion more than doubles that figure by lifting the trophy.

In a compact European Tour format, that creates immediate pressure. Van Gerwen cannot afford to look beyond Gilding, because a single loose spell can turn a promising campaign into a last-16 exit. If he advances, he must reset quickly for the evening’s quarter-final, semi-final and final.

For Van Gerwen, the route is clear enough: beat Gilding, manage a packed evening session, and the reward will follow the silverware.
