Tom Sykes has turned one European Tour weekend into a much sharper ProTour question.
The Castleford thrower reached the semi-finals on his European Tour debut at the inaugural Slovak Darts Open in Bratislava, a run that included wins over Niko Springer, Martin Schindler, Cameron Menzies and Jermaine Wattimena before Rob Cross stopped him 7-2 in the last four.
Sykes’ first-round 6-2 win over Springer was the clearest warning sign. He averaged 103.64, hit 60% of his doubles and took out 148 and 103 finishes, telling the PDC afterwards: “I know I’ve got the game to beat anyone.”
Why Leicester Now Matters
The timing is useful. The PDPA calendar lists Players Championship 23 and 24 for Leicester on July 6-7, with the entry deadline falling on Monday, June 29. That double-header sits directly before the European Tour returns in Leverkusen from July 10-12.
Sykes is not being discussed merely as a good story from Bratislava, following earlier NineDartNews coverage of his post-Slovak Darts Open rankings lift. His 11 maximums at the Slovak event, plus four ton-plus checkouts, put him among the tournament’s livelier statistical performers, according to PDC Europe’s post-event figures.
The next test is whether that stage surge travels back to the floor. If it does, Sykes can turn one breakout weekend into something more durable: ranking money, Matchplay-adjacent pressure, and a stronger claim to be treated as a live threat rather than a late-developing curiosity.
