Justin Hood says whether Luke Littler will surpass Phil Taylor’s World Championship record

Phil Taylor is the greatest darts player of all time, but if anyone can surpass the Power, it’s Luke Littler.

Taylor won an incredible 16 world titles across his illustrious career, and also held the No. 1 position in the world rankings for 13 years.

It’s a record that some thought would be unbeatable until Littler burst onto the scene at the end of 2023 and has since won back-to-back Sid Waddell trophies, as well as 12 PDC Premier event titles.

Still only 19-years-old, the Nuke has time on his hands to surpass Taylor’s record, and some think he will.

Justin Hood backs Luke Littler to become the greatest ever

Longevity in darts led to James Wade becoming the first player to win 1,000 matches in Players Championship events after beating Lukas Wenig on Monday afternoon in Leicester.

On the other hand, many, including Adrian Lewis, have questioned Littler’s longevity in the sport, predicting him to retire early and fall short of Taylor’s record.

That isn’t an opinion shared by world No. 51 Justin Hood, who believes the teenage sensation is the best he’s ever seen.

“I’ve known Luke for a long time. I played him in Modus before all that. We would get there at 9am in the morning,” Hood told talkSPORT.

“I would be on the board for three hours practising and I had him first game. He would walk in, five minutes, 105 average, and then sit down 4-0 later.

“He is the best player I have ever seen. It is unbelievable what he can do on that board. I’ve got a good record against Luke, we are 2-2. I think he respects me and I can definitely respect what he can do.”

Hood has also backed Littler to break Taylor’s record of World Championship triumphs.

The 2026 World Championship quarter-finalist added: “He gets a lot of stuff online now because he is good, same as what Phil [Taylor] was getting and Michael [van Gerwen].

“He is unbelievably talented and I think he is going to go on and become the best ever.”

“I think if he gets to 10 world titles that will eclipse it. I wouldn’t put it past him to get to 20 if he stays hungry and wants it.”

Littler continues to dominate

Dominance is a word many associate with Taylor’s career, and Littler is following in the same vein as the veteran.

In the Premier League, the world champion has surged into first position after winning three of the last four nights.

Littler even hit two 170 checkouts in last week’s final against Michael van Gerwen, while recording a ton-plus average across his three matches.

The Premier League is the next major that Littler could lift for the second time, and if he does, he will go four behind Taylor’s record of six.
