Jonny Clayton can make Josh Rock equal unwanted Premier League record

Luke Littler survived five-match darts as he somehow came from 5-0 down to beat Gerwyn Price to secure his second nightly win in Dublin.

In an extraordinary turn of events, Littler waved goodbye to the crowd when Price left double tops, thinking he was going to pin it and whitewash him 6-0.

But the Welshman narrowly missed double tops and four more match darts as the Nuke rattled off six legs in quick succession to complete one of the greatest comebacks.

A dramatic final was fitting for a night that served up even more incredible darts as Josh Rock’s woes in the competition continued.

Josh Rock closing in on an unwanted Premier League record

On a night where Littler and Michael van Gerwen both reeled in the big fish in the same match, Rock reached a new low against Price.

The Northern Irishman was on the receiving end of a 6-0 whitewash after averaging a lowly 84 and missing all four of his darts at double.

A seventh successive defeat for Rock leaves him at the bottom of the table and a huge 11 points behind fourth-place Luke Humphries.

Worryingly for the 24-year-old, he’s now two weeks away from equalling an unwanted Premier League record.

Quarter-final exits in Berlin and Manchester would see him match Glen Durrant’s run of nine matches without a win in 2021.

The former Premier League champion is the only player to fail to win a match after being eliminated in week nine under the old format.

Since the new format was introduced in 2022, no player has failed to win fewer than two matches in a season.

Peter Wright’s two wins from 18 games to return four points in 2024 is the worst record by a player following the change.

Jonny Clayton can heap further misery on Rock

Away from the Premier League, meanwhile, Rock is a different player, most recently reaching the UK Open semi-final before being knocked out by Littler.

However, Rock only lost that showdown 11-9 and proved he can compete against the very best, which hasn’t been the case during his debut in this competition.

Having only averaged a ton-plus on two occasions, while seeing his average drop as low as 79, Rocky is a shadow of his usual self, and Jonny Clayton can heap further misery on him.

In the next two weeks, Clayton plays the Northern Irishman twice in the quarter-finals. The Ferret has been outstanding throughout the first seven weeks, despite losing 6-3 to Humphries on Thursday night.

Clayton remains at the top of the table by three points after night seven, and on current form, it’s hard to see Rock dismantling the former Premier League champion.
