Premier League Darts: Night 7 preview & predictions

A thrilling night of darting action is promised when the Premier League heads to Dublin on Thursday.

On night six in Nottingham, Jonny Clayton became the first player to pick up a second nightly win with a 6-1 thrashing of Luke Humphries.

Clayton has now won two of the three finals he has been involved in so far, following his triumph in Glasgow after losing to Luke Littler on night five in Cardiff.

The Ferret is the man to beat in the Premier League and holds an eight-point lead at the top of the table. But can the Welshman continue his dominance at the 3Arena in Dublin?

Here, NineDartNews predicts how night seven could unfold, starting with the quarter-finals.

Gian van Veen vs Michael van Gerwen

An all-Dutch quarter-final gets the evening’s actions underway in Dublin, and Michael van Gerwen will be aiming to bounce back from his recent miserable displays.

After being ruled out of night three through illness, Van Gerwen has suffered three quarter-final exits at the hands of Gerwyn Price, Humphries and Clayton to tumble down the standings.

The Green Machine also suffered a shock exit at the hands of Niels Zonneveld in European Tour action over the weekend, as his recent woes continued.

Whilst disappointment was the overriding emotion, Van Gerwen did average a sensational 107 against his Dutch counterpart, and he must replicate that performance on Thursday.

Van Veen has also struggled following a strong start on his Premier League debut, losing twice at the first hurdle in as many nights. But the 23-year-old has still maintained a strong 42.54% checkout percentage throughout the tournament so far, and that could be the difference against an out-of-sorts Van Gerwen.

Prediction: Van Veen 6-2 Van Gerwen

Stephen Bunting vs Luke Littler

Stephen Bunting has turned his Premier League prospects around in a matter of weeks.

From going pointless in the first three nights, the Bullet claimed a nightly win in Belfast and has since accumulated another two points.

Despite losing 6-3 against Clayton in last week’s semi-final, Bunting remains just two points shy of a play-off place, and he can close the gap on Littler with victory in Dublin.

Littler heads into night seven in second position, eight points behind Clayton, and the UK Open champion will be looking to continue his recent surge.

The 19-year-old has only lost one of his last five matches in the competition, and that defeat came in a 6-5 thriller against Humphries on night six. Littler’s 101.31 average suggests he was unfortunate to lose that showdown, and if he demonstrates the same level of power scoring against Bunting, he will find it difficult to keep up with him.

Prediction: Bunting 3-6 Littler

Josh Rock vs Gerwyn Price

Josh Rock’s introduction to the Premier League has been unforgiving, with the Northern Irishman failing to secure victory in each of the first six nights, leaving him pointless at the bottom.

It would take a monumental turnaround for Rock to put himself into playoff contention at this stage, and the chances of snatching points against an in-form Price look very slim.

Price has been consistent throughout the tournament, with the second-highest checkout percentage (44.74%) and a respectable 98 average. The Welshman has also proven difficult to beat in other PDC events, as he tasted an 8-3 loss to Wessel Nijman in Sunday’s European Tour final.

The Iceman is the last opponent anyone wants to face on a losing streak, and unfortunately, we see Rock crumbling on the Premier League stage once more.

Prediction: Rock 4-6 Price

Jonny Clayton vs Luke Humphries

Clayton will be looking to extend his lead at the top of the Premier League when he clashes with Humphries.

The world No. 5 was at his clinical best in last week’s final against Cool Hand, with 66.67% (6/9) on the checkouts, a complete contrast to his opponent.

Humphries has been wasteful on the outer ring in this year’s tournament, missing seven of his eight attempts at double during his 6-1 defeat. Indeed, the former world champion has the second-lowest checkout percentage (34.69%), behind only Rock (23.21%).

Failure to convert his opportunities into legs on the board could see Clayton punish him once more and book his place in another semi-final. But we do expect Humphries to be much-improved from last week’s humiliation, even if it isn’t enough to post six legs on the board.

Prediction: Clayton 6-5 Humphries

Semi-finals

Littler 6-4 Van Veen

Clayton 6-5 Price

Littler 6-4 Clayton
