Wessel Nijman’s journey to winning his first senior title at the European Darts Trophy in Göttingen is one of the most intriguing stories in modern darts. A player who was marked very early as a future superstar, his career is one early promise, a devastating setback, and a methodical rise back up the rankings culminating in last night win.
Born in the Netherlands in 2000, Nijman quickly developed into one of the most promising young players in the sport. Growing up in a country with a strong darts tradition, he was inspired by the success of Dutch professionals on the international circuit. From an early age he displayed natural scoring power and a fast playing rhythm that caught the attention of fans and fellow players. His performances in youth and early professional tournaments suggested he possessed the ability to compete at the highest level.
As Nijman began appearing in Professional Darts Corporation events, he built a reputation as an exciting prospect. His heavy scoring and fearless style made him a dangerous opponent even against more experienced players. Many observers believed that with continued development he could establish himself as a regular contender on the professional tour.
However, his career was dramatically interrupted in 2020. During the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional tournaments were suspended, leading to the creation of online competitions such as the Modus Live League, which allowed players to compete remotely. Nijman took part in several of these events, but unusual betting patterns were detected during matches in April and May of that year.
The suspicious activity was flagged by the International Betting Integrity Association and investigated by the Darts Regulation Authority, the governing body responsible for discipline in professional darts. The investigation revealed that Nijman had deliberately lost a match 4–0 to David Evans on 14 May 2020.
In August 2020, Nijman was suspended from participating in events sanctioned by the Darts Regulation Authority after admitting his involvement in the match-fixing incident. At a disciplinary hearing in October, the authority imposed a five-year ban from the sport. However, two and a half years of the ban were suspended after Nijman agreed to take part in player education and anti-corruption programmes. He was also ordered to pay £2,455.74 in costs.
Nijman accepted the ruling and publicly apologised, describing his actions as a “stupid mistake.” Although he explained that he had been placed under pressure by others to deliberately lose the match, he acknowledged that the final decision had been his responsibility. The punishment represented a major setback for a young player who had only recently begun establishing himself on the professional circuit.
His suspension lasted until 18 February 2023, keeping him away from professional darts for more than two years. When he returned, Nijman faced the difficult challenge of rebuilding his career and restoring his reputation within the sport. Despite the obstacles, he approached his comeback with renewed determination.
Gradually, he began to rediscover the form that had made him such a highly regarded prospect. His scoring ability remained one of his greatest strengths, often producing high averages that allowed him to compete with experienced professionals. Just as importantly, the adversity he had faced appeared to strengthen his mental resilience.
Over the next seasons Nijman’s performances steadily improved. He became more consistent in tournaments and increasingly confident under pressure. With every event he played, he demonstrated that he had the ability to compete with some of the best players on the circuit.
That progress finally culminated in a breakthrough moment at the European Darts Trophy in Göttingen. Entering the tournament as a dangerous outsider rather than a favourite, Nijman produced some of the finest darts of his career. Throughout the event he combined powerful scoring with crucial finishing, defeating a series of strong opponents.
By the time he reached the final, Nijman had already proven that his run was no accident. In the deciding match he remained composed, delivering a confident performance to secure victory and claim his first senior professional title.
