Rob Cross has turned a losing Slovak Darts Open final into a timely ranking marker before July’s decisive PDC swing.
Cross was beaten 8-3 by Wessel Nijman in Bratislava, but the shape of his week mattered. He defeated Gian van Veen, Kevin Doets, Nathan Aspinall and Tom Sykes before running into the sport’s most explosive ProTour player of 2026.

Cross’ run lands before a loaded July
The next pressure point is obvious. Players Championship 23-24 will be staged from July 6-7, with the World Matchplay field finalised after Event 24, before the European Tour resumes at the European Darts Open in Leverkusen from July 10-12.
PDC Europe lists a £230,000 European Tour prize fund for Leverkusen, including £35,000 to the winner, and ranking money counting across the PDC, ProTour and European Tour tables. That makes Cross’ Bratislava response more than a consolation run.
Nijman’s 8-3 final win underlined why NineDartNews has already tracked his ProTour lead before July, but Cross has also sharpened his own case. With Leicester now carrying similar urgency for players on the cut line, including the PC Finals race around Max Hopp, Cross has banked evidence that his scoring ceiling is still live.
The final score in Bratislava was heavy. The wider message was not: Cross is still dangerous when the calendar turns transactional.
